NPR quotes Geraldo Rivera who has taken on the anti-immigrant fervor in his new book, as saying in an interview: "The hostility by some anti-immigrant activists against Hispanics is no different from that directed against earlier generations of Irish, Italian and Jewish immigrants... It's a hysterical whipping up of a mob frenzy on an issue that should be recognized that it is part of a process that makes this country unique, and by exacerbating the differentness of the newcomers, what they do is a gross disservice."

Dear Weekly Editor:
Is this comment (IW 2/3/08) speaking of immigrants or illegal immigrants? Walking in the shoes of immigrants is one thing but pretending to be an illegal immigrant is another. None of the people I know, all of whom are true American patriots, would not be sympathetic to emulating an illegal alien's experience. We, first of all, would NOT be in any country illegally because we were brought up to OBEY LAWS and not break them and then flaunt that fact in the faces of citizens of a country. Lawlessness will never be accepted in a country based on morals, rule of law and civility. And we will never accept illegal immigrants, no matter their race, as they are breaking our laws, taking our jobs, defiling our country, laughing in our faces because our own government refuses to enforce the very laws that they made. What hipocracy! And as to what king of America we want: An America that upholds it's laws, that has set standards and limits on immigration, that allows only descent people to become citizens after waiting THEIR TURN and doesn't reward lawbreakers. An America that protects it's citizens, young and old, against invasion and puts it's people first. We have millions of homeless, unemployed, elderly, infirm and otherwise needy people here to take care of with our hard-earned tax dollars. That is the kind of America this should be so that anyone who comes here LEGALLY and assimilates will then be assured that they are living in a country that will protect and care for them, in which they can safely pursue the American dream. That's the kind of America we want.
