Judicial Nominees And Immigration

Congress will return to work shortly and many observers worry that the Senate's time will be consumed with controversy over President Bush's judicial nominees, leaving little time for anything else, including immigration reform. We are not so sure. With the judicial nominee issue likely to sour relationships between the parties, Senators may want to work together on the few areas of common ground to preserve amity in the Senate. Immigration reform is the obvious point to move forward on. Since the House has decided to play ostrich and pretend that immigrants will just go away, the Senate is the chamber of hope for those waiting anxiously for Congress to resolve an immigration policy which badly needs fixing.
