Dear Editor:
Recent letters to the editor oppose Mayor Bloomberg's comments on granting legal status to illegals. I'd like to share this story with your readers. I used to live in NYC and owned a family townhouse. One of the tenants there barely eked out a living, a single mother with two kids. She supported herself by working mostly temp jobs. She didn't pay rent for 4 months, but I was reluctant to bother her because of her situation. I knew of a job that paid $6.50/hr. and medical benefits. When I offered her the job, she flatly said no; she didn't want to work at a low paying job, and said, "She was a US citizen and would rather be unemployed than work for $6.50/hr." The undocumented, who are already here, have to live too, with or without govt help. But one thing's for sure they are not paying taxes and mostly work under the table. Employers benefit by not declaring payroll taxes and not paying taxes. Lost revenue exceeds issuing an id. Seldom do US citizens want to work low paying jobs. Mayor Bloomberg was right.
