Special Registration Requirements

 

INS requires that nonimmigrant males of certain ages, from certain countries, who were admitted to the US at particular times and who will stay past a certain limit, register at an INS office. As of 20 January, four groups are required to register, as indicated below.

Asylees

Asylum applicants who applied by the date registration was announced for their group: Group I 11/6/02; Group II 11/22/02; Group III 12/16/02; Group IV 1/16/03.

Lawful residents and citizens

 

Penalties for Wilfully Failing to Register:

Loss of legal status; hence, inability to change or extend status. 8 CFR 214.1(f)

Deportability for failure to maintain status. INA 237(a)(3)(A)

Failure to register upon leaving US creates presumption of inadmissibility later. INA 212(a)(3)(A)(ii).

Criminal penalties: Fine up to $1,000 and/or imprisonment up to 6 months. INA 266.
