Dear Editor:

In her letter of 4/23/02 Ms. Christine Flowers wrote that I believed that I could "...speak for the majority of Americans", and she inferred that I "...claim to know what the majority of Americans is thinking". What I had said was: "A majority of Americans want fewer immigrants, according to the polls". If that's misleading, mea culpa. I'm aware that "liars can figure and figures can lie", but I think my statement was accurate. If Ms. Flowers has poll results to the contrary, I'd be happy to look them up if she would provide the cites. Thanks very much to Mr. Ali Alexander for "bailing me out"; I had spent several hours looking for a list similar to the one he submitted. The only thing I'd add is a poll conducted by CBS News and the New York Times. It was conducted during three different periods - 9/13 & 14/01, 9/20-23/01 and 12/7-10/01. The respondents favored reductions in legal immigration - 53%, 57% and 59%, respectively. (See www.numbersusa.com)
