Dear Editor:

In his letter of 2/22/02 Mr. Baer opines that we should "be looking for a solution to the immigration problem" rather than quibbling over "how to label the people who are in our country illegally." As one who would like to see a large reduction in immigration, I agree. If it would help to move the debate along, I'll call them "undocumented immigrants" as long as it's understood that it stands for people who are in this country illegally and that the title doesn't imply a waiver of their illegality.

Every poll of which I'm aware has indicated that a large majority of U.S. citizens favor a large reduction in immigration and stricter enforcement of the immigration laws. We "reductionists" would welcome an honest national debate.
