REMOVALS

Total removals for December decreased 40 percent compared to the same month a year before. In December 2001, INS removed 8,201 aliens from the United States, 4,398 of these aliens were criminals.

  • The current month's statistics are preliminary. Historically there have been significant upward revisions in the statistics for three months after the initial reporting period. The November statistic for total removals has increased 9 percent (812 removals) since the preliminary number was released last month.
  • Preliminary data indicate that total removals in the first quarter of fiscal year 2002 decreased 32 percent compared to fiscal year 2001. In the first quarter expedited removals decreased 70 percent compared to fiscal year 2001. Other types of removals decreased 8.5 percent comparing FY 2002 to FY 2001. Non-expedited removals were 84 percent of total removals. In fiscal year 2000 non-expedited removals were 54 percent of total removals; in fiscal year 2001 they were 60 percent of total removals.
  • Revised data indicate that removals of criminal aliens (including expedited) decreased 10 percent in the first quarter. Non-expedited criminal removals decreased 7 percent.
