IMMIGRATION JUDGE MILLS TRANSFERS TO NEW YORK CITY

FALLS CHURCH, VA - The Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) announced today the assignment of Immigration Judge Miriam Mills from the Immigration Court in Detroit, MI, to the Immigration Court in New York City.

Judge Miriam Mills was appointed Immigration Judge in May 1997. Prior to her assignment to the Immigration Court in New York City, she served as an Immigration Judge at the Immigration Court in Detroit, MI, from April 2000 to July 2001. From May 1997 to February 2000, Judge Mills was assigned to the Immigration Court in Los Angeles, CA. She received her B.A. from City University of New York in 1974, and her J.D. from Rutgers University School of Law in 1978. Judge Mills was in private practice in Washington, DC, from 1994 to 1997. She served as an administrative judge for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in Washington, DC, from 1983 to 1993. Judge Mills served as counsel to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, U.S. Senate, Washington, DC, from 1981 to 1983. She is a member of the District of Columbia Bar.

EOIR is the component of the U.S. Department of Justice responsible for developing policies and directing activities related to the conduct of administrative hearings and appellate reviews on a variety of immigration issues, including the determination of individuals' immigration status in the United States.

Immigration Judges are responsible for conducting formal administrative proceedings to determine whether foreign-born individuals who are charged with violations of Federal immigration law should be removed from the United States or granted relief from removal. Immigration Judges decide each case independently and their decisions are final unless appealed or certified to the Board of Immigration Appeals. In the past year, Immigration Judges completed more than 250,000 such proceedings. They are also authorized to administer oaths of citizenship to candidates for naturalization.
