Dear Editor:

I don't know if seminarians in general would think of subscribing to Immigration Daily/Weekly, but I have found it a blessing. A friend from church, Carl Baldwin, suggested you as a resource for a team project I was engaged upon this semester, a case study for both ethics and social theory/social analysis. The case was of a hypothetical refugee put into detention immediately upon landing at JFK, with shackles, the whole bit. I was absolutely appalled to learn that this was very close to reality in this country. I have learned about other horrors inflicted on undocumented--and even legal--immigrants in the name of the law. (We eventually met a parolee from a detention center and got confirmation from the horse's mouth.) But I am committed not to law, made by humans, but to justice as commanded in the scriptures of my tradition.

I get the sense that your organization may be also committed to justice and not simply to earning a living. I congratulate you on the first anniversary of Immigration Daily. My course is over in a couple of weeks, but I am going to continue the subscription for awhile. (Another blessing for offering it free.)

Margaret Wise
