Dear Editor,

If Congress passes the INS Budget proposals for FY2001 as requested, it will undoubtedly be a sign that the United States government needs a reality check over immigration. The monies requested for enforcement appears to confirm that INS thinks its powers are best exercised by running a virtual 'police state' in admissions and deportations. If INS gets a massive enforcement budget to control immigration in this manner, Congress will find by 2002 that it has sown the seeds of malcontentedness right across the nation that will produce even more dire consequences for the US economy. This INS enforcement attitude is akin to Hoover's FBI in the sixties of ridding the US of undesirables. We simply need ordered immigration with hugely accelerated service levels and technology to control it, not costly militarism. US immigration enforcement is a money-pit. Taxpayers please take note!
