Comment: Ryan On Immigration -
Mitt Romney's announcement of Paul Ryan as his running mate in the upcoming Presidential election was the national news story of this past weekend, so naturally ILW.COM began digging deeper into his Ryan's voting history and recent commentary on immigration policy. During primary season, Mitt Romney took the hardest stance on immigration enforcement that any major party candidate for President has ever taken. Paul Ryan's history suggests he is more moderate than Romney has been to date, but a few more salient conclusions also come to the forefront. The most significant conclusion is that immigration is not a priority issue for Ryan. He has shown a willingness to work hard for issues that matter to him, like the national budget, and he has rarely spoken out on immigration issues. Thus, his stance on immigration policy can largely only be gleaned from his voting record. Like much of the GOP, Ryan's stance on immigration issues appears to have grown more conservative over the past decade and a half, but does feature a number of splits from his party. A recent Washington Times article suggested Ryan is somewhat in the mold of George W. Bush on immigration, which favored more sensible, realistic policy than much of the party. Nonetheless, Ryan's record on immigration is decidedly mixed. Ryan voted against the DREAM Act in 2010. On the other hand, he voted for a 2002 legalization bill, spoke out in favor of the 2006 Senate immigration bill that W. advocated, and he co-sponsored a 2009 Democratic bill that would have legalized certain immigrant farm workers; in each scenario, he was among the minority in his party. Ryan held the party line on votes to secure the Mexican border by fence and a 2005 bill that would have turn undocumented presence in the US from a civil violation to a criminal one. He also supported expansion of the e-verify program. In sum, Ryan's record is fairly in line with his party's standards, but he has shown a willingness to consider immigration policy on an issue-by-issue basis.
