Under pressure from the anti-immigration wing of the Republican party, her campaign grew progressively more anti-immigration and culminated in the final weeks of the campaign in Whitman calling for the deportation of the woman who had kept her house and cared for her children for nine years – the one she had once described as a “member of our extended family.” See the story of the campaign here.
Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard started Hewlett Packard in a one car garage in 1939, and built it into one of the largest information technology companies in the world - it currently stands 11th on the Fortune 500 list. However for the past few years this venerable Silicon Valley company has been struggling under the weight of a board that has had a spectacular series of failures to its disrepute: failed product lines like its Tablet, a tanking stock price and a string of failed CEOs. Its latest decision to hire Meg Whitman as its CEO continues this record. Hiring someone as CEO who has pushed aggressively for an anti-immigration policy that is destructive to the lives of a significant proportion of your customers, employees and investors is bad business. The company recently hired Goldman Sachs to protect itself from a growing number of its investors disappointed with the company’s strategic direction and performance. Perhaps those of us who take offense at the appointment of an anti-immigrationist at the head of a Fortune 500 company will join the protest against this board - as customers, as employees or as investors.
