Comment: Insecure Communities - The story of a heroic rescue of a 6-year old girl from her kidnappers underlines the nature of the fight against crime. Prevention of crime relies heavily on the eyes, ears and actions of everyone in the community. If a significant part of the community is concerned about participating in the fight against crime--as victims reporting crimes, witnesses witnessing it, or heroic rescuers stopping it in pogress--the job of local law enforcement is made increasingly difficult. That is the reason why many in local law enforcement have been vocal critics of the Secure Communities initiative that would draft them as Immigration enforcement officers--thus seriously undermining the trust and confidence they have earned from all the members of their community, and thereby leading to increased insecurity in the community.
