Comment: Undercounting Latino Vote - Latino Decisions points out that most polls, including exit polls, in the recent election systematically undercounted Latino support for Democrats. This discrepancy showed up most dramatically in states with a high percentage of Latino voters, the Nevada Senate race being the prime example (where Sen. Reid who had been the underdog in almost all polls pulled off a convincing victory over the Republican candidate in large part due to the undercounted Latino vote). Latino Decisions attributes the undercounting of Latino votes to the low incidence of bilingual interviewing which resulted in the over-representation of higher income and higher education Latinos. As the percentage of Latino voters in the electorate keeps rising year by year, these variances between polls and actual votes are likely to be magnified. Future pollsters may have to either (a) start polling in Spanish also and/or (b) introduce a "weighting" mechanism to account for this systemic error. Psephology, the science of polling, is yet another field affected as America's immigration story continues to unfold.
