Immigrant Is Elected President

President-elect Barack Obama's landslide win makes him the seventh President to have an immigrant parent. According to Wiki info, five presidents (Jefferson, Buchanan, Arthur, Wilson, Hoover) had one immigrant parent each and one president (Jackson) had two immigrant parents. President-elect Obama's win is keeping with America's tradition as a country of immigrants.

Dear Editor:
The free wheeling allowance of Visa Waivers to citizens of countries that traditionally overstay their visas, mentioned in Jose Latour's article (11/05/08 ID) is indeed another Bush administration boondoggle. As Mr. Latour's Article so aptly points out, the Bush administration has utterly failed to "grasp the basic fundamentals of migratory policy," instead grandstanding in the rose garden for a photo op, virtually welcoming Eastern Europeans who otherwise would not have qualified for a visitor visa because of inability to show significant ties to their home country, to jump on an airplane and take advantage of all America. And advantage they will take, the inch given will become a mile for many. Not just Disneyland, but a cornucopia of low skilled jobs, offered by scofflaw American employers, waiting to be filled by workers who don't mind breaking the law and working for low wages. Of course, the prospect of coming to America is especially appealing to the potential illegals, because of the possibility of "Comprehensive Immigration Reform", which would legalize millions of illegal aliens - maybe even them, who knows? Well, one can hope, and hope is the key to the golden door of America that will make reality of Emma Lazarus' poem "The New Colossus", which ends, "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wrechted refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest tost to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door" It appears that lamps will be lifted as once again the carrot of prosperity is hung over America's borders on the stick of hope, this time reaching as far as Eastern Europe. Like the field of dreams, if you build it, they will come. And they will come, you can count on that.
