Post Election GOP Fate

A Wall Street editorial says, "The worst GOP instinct would be to mimic Britain's Tories after their 1997 shellacking by Tony Blair, becoming a "no" party that spends so much time howling against the opposition it forgets what to howl for. It could curl up and stoke bitter cultural fights (immigration, abortion) to rev up a dwindling base." For the full editorial, see here.

Dear Editor:
The New Times article commenting on the TV commercial warning that immigration will increase America's carbon footprint once again renews the preposterous point of view by anti-immigrant groups, attempting to gain support by linking a topic of public concern to immigration (10/31/08 ID comment). The quotation from California Immigrant Policy Center's director, Reshma Shamasunder, sums it up - "The ad is utter nonsense. It uses information from CIS, which is clearly an anti-immigration group." It seems the bigots and the hate mongers will say anything and do anything to get their point across - no immigrants, especially immigrants of color. Of course, remember that the founders and executives of groups like FAIR, CIS and VDARE make big money off their organizations and prey on those of like minds for donations to support their campaign of misinformation, fanaticism hatred and bigotry, all the while laughing all the way to the bank. Now I'm not saying they don't believe their rhetoric. I am sure they do. So did Adolph Hitler, who truly believed the Aryan race was superior and that the Germans were the superior Aryans. Neo-Nazis and Skin Heads probably still believe that. Currently, America is threatened by terrorists of all sorts, not only from the Middle East, but from within, from religious groups more pious than God himself and right-wing political fanatics who will lie, cheat and steal to get what they want; total control of every human being in America and the world. Achtung! Nobel Prize winning author Sinclair Lewis is quoted as saying, "When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross." The Global Warming issue appears to have added a new dimension to Mr. Lewis' wisdom.
