CIS Townhall

The CIS Ombudsman's Office has launched a series of telecons to receive honest feedback and measure the effectiveness of local district offices. Immigration Daily attended the "New York District Office: How Is It Working For You?" telecon on Tuesday, January 23, 2007. Callers were invited to anonymously voice comments and concerns during the hour-long call. Response to the telecon was overwhelmingly positive. CIS Ombudsman Khatri urged individuals to work together with the Ombudsman's Office and alert them to specific problems (including case #, A#, names, noting that submission of case specific information did not forgo available client legal remedies). Large amounts of data allows the Ombudsman's office to identify recurring and systemic problems and helps to establish standardized guidelines to improve USCIS practices.

Comments from the audience included:

  • improving INFOPASS
  • issues with Garden City District Office
  • dissemination of USCIS information outside of AILA liaison minutes
  • breakdown of communication - non-compliance with G-28s, no receipts of confirmation
  • denials coming out late
Recommendations from the audience included:
  • expansion of community relations bureau
  • opening AILA liaison meetings to all bar assocations/organizations
  • inclusion of Garden City in INFOPASS program
  • exploring alternatives to INFOPASS program
  • improving system of communication with adjudication officers
  • increasing outreach to community-based organizations
  • provide additional training to USCIS adjudication officers

The telecon is part of the CIS Ombudsman's overall outreach efforts. Plans are underway to expand the program to telecons discussing specific issues national in scope rather than by District Office. Invitation to future telecons can be made by adding your name to the mailing list, contact: cisombudsmanpublicaffairs@dhs.gov. To learn more about the CIS Ombudsman's Office, see here.

We welcome readers to share their opinion and ideas with us by writing to editor@ilw.com.

    Dear Editor:
Due to an apparent misunderstanding between myself and the ID Editor, my letter of January 23 contained the phrase "Mr. Murray's letter, to whom I defer on this point"... My letter should, of course, have said: "to which I defer" instead of "to whom I defer". I apologize to all ID readers for the mistake.
