Dear Editor:
Responding to Honza Prchal, Esq.'s letter (ID 11/28/06), a 700-mile fence is a bad idea, not to mention patently un-American, costly and a symbol of the beginning of American isolationism. China's wall - didn't work, now a tourist attraction. The wall around the Imperial City of Hue, South Vietnam, ineffective against TET of 1968. The Soviet Union's wall - the primary symbol of Cold War tyranny, now torn down, didn't work. And the Domino Theory? No country fell to communism because of the US leaving Vietnam, and none were spared communism because the US spent more than a decade and over 50,000 American lives there, all for naught. Vigorously, and I mean vigorously, pass and enforce US immigration law against employers who employ undocumented workers and it will stem the tide of rampant illegal immigration presently faced by our nation. No jobs = no illegal workers. But along with vigorous enforcement must come a cogent plan to provide legal immigrant workers to employers who desperately need them to perform shortage and seasonal jobs. Or (tongue-in-cheek), take the nation's welfare rolls, ship them to California, and let them pick the grapes, oranges, and the avocadoes, and hoe the lettuce. Legislative initiative is up to the Congress to resolve. My bet is that Congress never will effectively resolve the immigration problem, because legislators in both houses of Congress have demonstrated they are incapable of creating good immigration legislation. It is the fault of the Congress for creating and ignoring the mess America is in today, not only in the area of immigration, but the war in Iraq, the national debt, and on and on. The attitude of Congress is that it is easier to bury their collective heads in the sand and simply build a 700-mile wall. What a lame idea.
