USCIS Reaches Special Immigrant Translator Cap
USCIS announced that it has received enough petitions requesting special immigrant status from Afghan and Iraqi translators to meet the FY 2007 visa cap. Dear Editor:
I agree with the point in David D. Murray's letter (11/13/06 ID) that immigration did not determine the midterm election. However, the fact that Congressman J.D. Hayworth and a number of other Republican anti-immigrant hard liners were defeated, together with the fact that Democrats made big gains in the Latino vote, should be a warning sign for the Republicans that they are in danger of becoming the "white man's" party, which will ensure permanent minority status for the GOP as the country inevitably becomes more diverse. Unfortunately, it seems that the Republican right wing just doesn't get it, judging from all the ranting on Fox News about how Republicans should "stand on principle" and oppose any move by President Bush to cut a deal with the Democrats on immigration that "smacks of amnesty". While President Bush's knowledge of demographics in Iraq leaves a lot to be desired, as his disastrous war has shown, his understanding of demographics in Texas and the rest of the country is second to none. When it comes to immigration, Republicans should listen to him. Unless they want to go the way of the Whigs, they should see to it that their favorite slogans, such as "no amnesty for illegals", "English only" and protecting American "culture" and "sovereignty" from immigrant "invaders", as well as all of the current blather about "overpopulation", the scare tactic du jour, enter the history books without further delay. Otherwise the Republican party itself may become part of history.

Dear Editor:
Midterm election is over now, and Democratic won the election. Both chambers of the Congress, Democratic can play a major role now. The prime cause for defeat of Republican in this election is not immigration as Frank Sharry's article (11/13/06 ID) states, but it is President Bush's policy on Iraq that played a major role in trouncing Republican. Most of all the people especially illegal aliens living in the US strongly believe now that there will not be any hassles and obstacles in enacting comprehensive immigration reform legislation. Although his own party House Republicans seemed to block comprehensive immigration reform, President Bush has strongly been pushing for it. He has repeatedly spoken that guest worker program is an integral part of comprehensive immigration reform, and that under which people can come on a temporary basis to work to do jobs American are not doing. If this guest worker program is meant for legalizing illegals living in the US, there will be a great injustice to the other people who have been legally waiting for years to come to the US under family-based immigration. Legalization will encourage aliens to be illegals, and thus invite further wave of illegal immigration. Illegals living in US have to return to their countries. What kind of guest worker program is this? The same as temporary worker programs in Germany, Japan, Malaysia, and Arabian countries? After expiration of their work permit, the foreign workers working in these countries must go back to their respective countries. Furthermore, their status will never be adjusted to permanent resident. Foreign workers in these countries are doing the jobs people of their host country are not doing. If President Bush is speaking of this kind of temporary worker program, Congress may not have any obstructions in enacting comprehensive immigration reform legislation.
