Esquire Versus Attorney At Law
Immigration Daily readers may wish to know the difference between Esq. and Attorney at law. Although often the terms are used interchangably, the terms have different meaning. While the title "Esq." is used as a suffix in the US to designate individuals who are licensed to practice law in at least one US jurisdiction, there is no formal meaning associated with the use of this suffix, and there is no official body that polices the use of this title by American lawyers. Thus, Esq. is sometimes used by individuals who have earned law degrees — such as a Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) — but who do not currently practice law or who have never been licensed to practice law, and for students who are still pursuing their law degrees (as they are considered members of the legal profession). By contrast an attorney-at-law is a lawyer, a person trained and licensed to practice law, to represent clients in legal matters (both in and out of court) and to give legal advice (source: Wikipedia: Esquire and Wikipedia: Attorney at law).
Immigration Daily will continue to use the suffix, Esq. to designate letters to the Editor received from attorneys.
