Rep Cannon Wins Primary

According to a Congressional Quarterly news report, "Five-term Rep. Chris Cannon survived the toughest challenge of his political career Tuesday against a political newcomer who portrayed the incumbent as soft on illegal immigration" (for the full story, see here).

Rep. Cannon's win (56-44 percent) is by a comfortable margin, proof that conservative Republican voters in Utah approve of Rep. Cannon's balanced approach to immigration reform. House Republicans should learn from Rep. Cannon's primary win and correct their misguided harsh approach to immigration reform. To do otherwise, is to proceed with peril because an anti-immigration stance will not garner support at the polls.

Dear Editor:
The letters of Mr. Murray, Mr. Ranger and Mr. Alexander (06/28/06 ID) are caricatures of the opinions I expressed in my letter (06/27/06 ID), not accurate statements of my views. The letters accuse me of calling anyone who wants to enforce the immigration laws or who disagrees with me about amnesty a racist. I said nothing of the kind in my letter and did not intend to state that Mr. Murray's is racist, as his letter claims I did. If there is anything in my letter that could reasonably be construed that way, I apologize. While I believe that the immigration "crisis", much like Saddam Hussein's supposed WMD, has been hyped up for political reasons, I am not in favor of either open borders or unrestricted immigration, and I believe that the immigration laws should be enforced, but in a rational and humane way, not by rounding up and summarily deporting 10 million people or using troops to engage in a turkey shoot at the Mexican border against people who mean us no harm. I also believe that it would be naive and disingenuous to pretend that race and racial feelings have nothing to do with the widespread tendencies by many media figures, politicians and groups such as the Minutemen to demonize Mexican and other brown skinned immigrants as "invaders", "criminals" and "terrorists" who are destroying our "culture" or "identity" and to push for laws like the House immigration bill, which would turn this country into a vast prison camp for even technical immigration violators and their US citizen family members or friends. This is where I differ with the above three letter writers, whose letters appear unwilling to acknowledge that race has anything at all to do with today's anti-immigrant movement.
