Take Away From Bilbray Win

According to media reports, Republican Bilbray's hard-line approach to immigration resulted in his recent victory at the polls. Anti-immigrationists tout this as yet another example of the American public's support of tough immigration laws. This explanation is wrong. The correct explanation follows. Democrats had long enjoyed control of state legislatures resulting in gerrymandering House districts in their favor. However, over the last decade, the Republican party has been ascendant and will likely lock in their control of the House. Rep. Bilbray's district represented an ideal Democratic target because the previous Republican representative committed criminal offenses. Yet, Democrat Busby lost. It is hard to imagine how Democrats will win back the House in November if they could not capture this seat. Immigration advocates, who have long worked with Democrats should take note of this inexorable trend. Immigration is no longer a niche issue; it is now front and center and pro-immigration advocates should wisely work with both parties - Democratic or Repubican on all immigration matters.

President Bush Speaks On Comprehensive Immigration

A NYT June 6, 2006 op-ed by John Tierney makes it clear that a valid, workable temporary visa program is the best security we ever could have. People on both sides of the border want to follow the law. Imperfect though it was, the bracero program gave them that option, and they used it. Enforcement was done successfully and with a much smaller border patrol. Mr. Gingrich (see 06/06/06 ID Article) (sp) and others who insist on enforcement first ultimately will move to one of tow alternative positions: (1) "enforcement only", because "enforcement first" is a contrary to economic laws of supply and demand; or (2) they will ultimately realize that a temporary worker program must go hand in hand with border enforcement, and will accept that program as a mutual component of a comprehensive approach to immigration. For a history teacher, he is woefully ignorant of the history and the relative success of the Bracero Program. Mr. Gingrich should read the Tierney article.

You might be interested in letting your readers know that Wisconsin wisely passed a law about a week ago to prevent anyone from having an identification chip implanted against their will for any purpose (06/06/06 ID comment). (Temporary foreign workers will object?) As an engineer, I find these implants a very poor solution to any identification problem (except of course for dogs, cats and cattle - animal or human). Who wants to be the next animal after those useful creatures to be chipped? Check out the company's website for further scary details.

Responding to S.Salike's letter (06/06/06 ID), S.2611.ES under Sec. 601 amending Chapter 5 of title II in particular Sec.245B (a)(1)(I) says that "The Secretary may not adjust the status of an alien under this section to that of lawful permanent resident until the Secretary determines that the priority dates have become current for the class of aliens whose family-based or employment-based petitions for permanent residence were pending on the date of the enactment of the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2006". Responding to S. Salike's letter, what is offensive to this provision in relation to people outside the US waiting for their turn for a greencard?
