Dear Editor:
Responding to Mr. Heid's letter (03/10/06 ID), the same security and economic arguments could be made for many of the industries we are seeing move overseas or sold to "foreigners": steel, automobiles, information technology, communications, management of our ports. Even our military is beginning to buy equipment produced abroad. However, I do agree with most of what Mr. Heid's letter says - until the last sentence: "All of these things require labor and to maintain them, low cost labor." First, it's certainly not true that all crops are necessary to food security, or that large farmers must grow them. Many of the foods we now buy at the grocery store didn't exist, were produced in family gardens, or were highly seasonal when I was a kid, suggesting that we can certainly live very well without them. While they're nice to have, they're not "necessary". In fact, we could argue that the abundance of food is contributing to our obesity epidemic. Second, since the US taxpayer is already directly subsidizing the growers in many instances, just why is it imperative that labor be "low cost" - unless it's to provide agribusiness, notably large growers, with even more of a profit margin? Third, for some crops such as tomatoes and raisins, capital has replaced much of the use of labor. US agriculture actually lags some lesser developed parts of the world in the use of modern agriculture techniques because of the reluctance on the part of US farmers to substitute investment in research and development and capital equipment for the expense of cheap exploitable labor.
