From the Office of Congressman Tom Tancredo
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 18, 2003

Tancredo Introduces Comprehensive Border Security Overhaul Bill

"One-Two Punch" Legislation Would Authorize Hiring of Unprecedented Number of Border Patrol Agents, Close Loopholes in Guest Worker Programs

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Tom Tancredo (CO-06) introduced legislation today designed to plug the gaping holes in both America’s porous borders and its dysfunctional guest worker programs. Tancredo’s bill becomes the fourth major piece of legislation whose intent is to rework federal guest worker programs. It is different from other proposals in that it does not provide amnesty to illegal aliens and it makes true border security a pre-condition or “trigger” required for the establishment of any guest worker program.

“Securing our borders will enable those who wish to seek economic opportunity in America to do so in a way that is safe and legal. Legal guest workers will not be subjected to the cruelty of coyotes and the possibility of death in the desert,” said Tancredo.

“This bill will also end the exploitation of illegal workers in our underground economy. Legal guest workers will not have to fear deportation and will not be subject to intimidation and mistreatment,” Tancredo concluded.

A summary of the highlights of Tancredo’s bill, the Border Enforcement and Revolving Employment to Assist Laborers or “BE REAL Act”, is attached.
