Miami, FL - On October 23, 2003, Volker Czechanowsky, a German national and lawful permanent resident of the United States, was convicted in U.S. District Court (Southern District) of threatening the President of the United States and was sentenced to 3 years' probation.

On November 4, 2003, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) commenced proceedings to remove Czechanowsky from the United States.

"Let this be a warning to anyone who threatens the life of the President of the United States," said Jesus Torres, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Miami ICE office. "We will use every tool at our disposal to insure they experience the full weight of the law."

ICE agents transported Czechanowsky to the Krome Detention Center on Friday, October 31st. He will remain in ICE custody while his deportation proceedings continue.

Torres commended the work of the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, the Miami Field Division of the FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Force for their investigative efforts.

Czechanowsky is amenable to deportation under sections 237 (a) (4) (B) (engaged in terrorist activity) and 237 (a) (2) (D) (ii) (convicted of any offense or conspiracy to commit any offense under 18 USC 871 or 960) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).
