< Go back to Immigration Daily FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 5, 2000 WASHINGTON, D.C. – The House Immigration and Claims Subcommittee took the rare action today of issuing a subpoena to Attorney General Janet Reno. The subpoena requires the Attorney General to produce records on the numbers of illegal immigrants. Congressman Lamar Smith, Chairman of the House Immigration and Claims Subcommittee, said "the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) is hiding the information because it would show that after the 1986 amnesty, illegal immigration doubled". On June 21, 2000, the Subcommittee formally requested an up-to-date statistical report on illegal immigration by July 15th. The INS replied that it would comply by the end of August. However, no information was provided. The INS finally scheduled a meeting to provide a report to Congress on September 28th, but the agency canceled the release a few hours before it was to occur. The INS claimed that it wanted to wait for better Census data for one part of the report and would not be able to release it until late November. The Subcommittee requested the release of the other parts of the report, but the INS refused. The Subcommittee also requested a provisional draft of the report, but again the INS refused. The American people are entitled to be kept informed by the INS, and Congress, acting on their behalf, requires up-to-date and accurate information to use in its policy deliberations", Smith said.
