The longstanding Hispanic tradition of having two surnames is something of pride and celebration. However, when filing form I-821D, this matter of pride takes on a dark role. Records for most individuals show only one last name, however, the form asks for the applicant’s full name. Does the applicant use the traditional full name with two last names or does (s)he use the single name that is used for the sake of public records? This culture shock serves to be trying for most individuals as they attempt to maintain their connection to their roots but also enhance their relationship to this country.
