Just Say No To Republicans and Democrats Alike

by Ruben Botello

President Barack Obama's lengthy trail of broken and soon-to-be-broken promises is well documented by PolitiFact.com, a 2009 Pulitzer Prize winner, at http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/promises/obameter/rulings/promise-broken/?page=1

Included in the detailed PolitiFact.com list ("Obameter") are over 40 major promises President Obama has already broken since he took over the White House.

The promises President Obama made and broke include:

  1. Increase the capital gains and dividends taxes for higher-income taxpayers,
  2. Expand the child and dependent care credit,
  3. Create a foreclosure prevention fund for homeowners,
  4. End income tax for seniors making less than $50,000,
  5. End no-bid contracts above $25,000,
  6. Repeal the Bush tax cuts for higher incomes,
  7. Phase out exemptions and deductions for higher earners,
  8. Sign the Employee Free Choice Act, making it easier for workers to unionize,
  9. Forbid companies in bankruptcy from giving executives bonuses,
  10. Allow workers to claim more in unpaid wages and benefits in bankruptcy court,
  11. Allow imported prescription drugs,
  12. Mandate insurance coverage of autism treatment,
  13. Appoint federal-level coordinator to oversee all federal autism efforts,
  14. Direct the Secretary of Health and Human Services to conduct a comprehensive study of federal cancer initiatives,
  15. Create a National Commission on People with Disabilities, Employment, and Social Security,
  16. Change federal rules so small businesses owned by people with disabilities can get preferential treatment for federal contracts,
  17. Form international group to help Iraq refugees,
  18. Close the Guantanamo Bay Detention Center,
  19. Reinstate special envoy for the Americas,
  20. Double the Peace Corps,
  21. Centralize ethics and lobbying information for voters,
  22. Allow five days of public comment before signing bills,
  23. Tougher rules against revolving door for lobbyists and former officials,
  24. Double funding for afterschool programs,
  25. Urge states to treat same-sex couples with full equality in their family and adoption laws,
  26. Allow bankruptcy judges to modify terms of a home mortgage,
  27. Restore Superfund program so that polluters pay for clean-ups,
  28. Re-establish the National Aeronautics and Space Council,
  29. Support human mission to moon by 2020,
  30. Pay for the national service plan without increasing the deficit,
  31. Limit term of director of national intelligence,
  32. Give annual "State of the World" address,
  33. Enact windfall profits tax for oil companies,
  34. Create cap and trade system with interim goals to reduce global warming,
  35. Require plug-in fleet at the White House,
  36. Provide an annual report on "state of our energy future",
  37. Allow penalty-free hardship withdrawals from retirement accounts in 2008 and 2009,
  38. Recognize the Armenian genocide,
  39. No family making less than $250,000 will see "any form of tax increase",
  40. Negotiate health care reform in public sessions televised on C-SPAN,
  41. Create a public option health plan for a new National Health Insurance Exchange, and
  42. Introduce a comprehensive immigration bill in the first year.

Millions of Latino voters are especially disappointed with President Obama's failure to push for immigration reform, as he guaranteed he would during his first year in the Oval Office (see http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/promises/obameter/promise/525/introduce-comprehensive-immigration-bill-first-yea/ ).

While a much more humane approach to immigration is proposed at http://www.ilw.com/articles/2011,0225-botello.shtm, the Obama Administration has consistently avoided comprehensive immigration reform altogether, as it rounds up more hardworking immigrants like cattle, tearing apart their families and traumatizing their children for no good or just cause whatsoever.

The Democratic Party takes Latinos and other poor, exploited and oppressed voters for granted, presuming we will vote for them no matter how many promises they break, based on the notion Democrats are "the lesser of two evils," and we wouldn't dare vote Republican. It is clear from all President Obama's broken promises that this vicious cycle -- having to choose between one of the two evil parties ruling our nation -- can only end, if all voters who truly believe in peace, justice and genuine democracy, refuse to vote for either evil, letting the cards fall where they fall.

Democratic Party hacks will clamor that failing to vote Democrat will only help Republicans, and I say what Emiliano Zapata, a great 20th-century Mexican revolutionary once said, "I would rather die on my feet than live on my knees." I would rather see President Obama and his disingenuous cronies lose the White House than witness four more years of their callous inhumanity under the guise of "spreading freedom and democracy around the globe."

The Democratic Party no longer deserves our vote much less our faith and trust, in what their candidates say they will do, in office. Just say no to Democrats and Republicans!
